If your on a limited budget, and you don’t have the money to spend on purchasing a custom or premium Opencart theme… make your own!
Making your own is 100% free, but it will cost you one thing… time. And you won’t get the support you would if you purchased a theme.
To start, it’s best to have an idea of what changes you would like to make to the default theme.
You don’t have to be an expert, but you will have to learn a bit of CSS!
Opencart templates are based on php, html and css. But you can completely change the design by changing the css only.
First you need to download the default Opencart theme via FTP to your hard drive. You can find this here: Your Store\catalog\view\theme\default
Once you have this downloaded, all you need to do is edit the css which you will find here: Your Store catalog\view\theme\stylesheet\stylesheet.css
You can do a google search to find good tutorials on how to use and edit CSS.
Google chrome is an excellent tool for developers. You can alter the css in the browser window to see a preview before physically making the edit which is an excellent time saving tool.
You will want to use dreamweaver to make the edits to the css. Dreamweaver isn’t free, but you can download a 1 month trial from Adobe
Or you can download free tools for editing html and css from the internet.
Rename the theme
Since your creating your own custom theme, you may want to rename it rather than overwrite the default theme.
When your finished making all your edits, simply re-upload to your server via FTP. If you have renamed the default template, you will have to go into your admin and change the theme to your newly designed theme.
